What Dose of Propolis Should You Be Taking?

proplis capsules

At Natures Naturals, one of the most common questions we receive is how much propolis to take. Bee Propolis is a  natural supplement that has many health benefits when taken properly.

There are several forms that bee propolis is available in. The most popular types include liquid propolis extract, propolis capsules, propolis lozenges and throat spray.

Liquid Propolis Extract

For general health purposes only, we recommend a third to half a dropper full of propolis extract daily. If you are using propolis for a sore throat, drop the extract directly onto the back of the throat where the inflammation is.

Propolis Capsules

If you are taking propolis for general health purposes only, we recommend 2-3 1000mg capsules per day. Capsules are the best option for convenience and travel due to their small size. Their antibacterial properties can help prevent coming down with a cold.

Propolis Lozenges

Propolis lozenges are raw pieces of bee propolis that you either swallow or chew on. Please be aware though, as propolis is quite a dark substance, it can stain your teeth. If it is staining your teeth simply resort to swallowing or choose a different way to get your daily dose of bee propolis. For general health, we recommend 2 chunks of raw propolis per day.

Propolis Throat Spray

Propolis throat spray is very similar to the extract dropper. We recommend a 2-3 sprays daily. It can be great for sore throats as you can target the inflammation directly.

These are general recommendations only. It is always best to read the directions on the packaging to make sure you are getting the maximum benefits from the products.

Healing Powers of Propolis

Propolis is not that well-known these days, but actually has an extensive history as being used as a healing medicine. Ancient Egyptians and Greeks used it for a multitude of purposes, and as a general health tonic.

What can Propolis do for Me?

Propolis has a range of health benefits. It is a natural antibiotic (due to a substance it contains called galangin) and a powerful antioxidant, which means it can help keep colds and flus away, and reduce their severity and duration.

It is an anti-inflammatory, so it can help you calm a sore throat or ease gum pain. It is actually a great oral cleanser, and can be chewed to help keep a clean mouth, keep away cavities, reduce plaque, and lower teeth sensitivity. Its antibacterial properties help you maintain fresh breath.

It also helps with circulation, so is good for your veins and heart, not to mention the brain. It can be applied to wounds to help them heal faster, another application of propolis’ antibacterial function. It is also an antifungal so can be used to treat yeast and fungal infections like athlete’s foot, candida, and ringworm. It may also be effective against parasites.

Propolis is an immune stimulant, which is another way it can prevent you from getting sick. Apart from reducing the risk of cancer due to its high antioxidant content, some research also puts forward that it may even cause cancer cell death. This is due to propolis’ components caffeic acid and chrysin.

What Makes Propolis so Effective?

The reason propolis is such a powerful healing medicine is because it is sourced from plant materials such as tree sap, which actually protects the tree from infection and intruders. The bees collect this for us and make it into a convenient putty-like material, and pass the protective properties on to you.

Healthy Supplements

You might be wondering if there are any health products you can take that have a wide range of benefits. There are a few gifts from nature that we stock that can do just that.

Propolis is a great all-round health booster. It can help boost your immune system, and stop you from getting colds and flu or at least reduce the duration and severity of the illness.

Propolis is packed in antioxidants, which can fight free radicals (the oxidisation of cells in your body). Propolis is also known for having a range of other benefits like antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial.

It can help boost your dental health if chewed, as it has a natural cleansing effect. It can also help balance your blood sugar by regulating your insulin. In this way it can help diabetics.

Squalene is another great health tonic. It is a natural substance that occurs in many plants and animals, and is usually harvested from shark liver, since it occurs in high levels there. It is also an antioxidant and is known for its anti-ageing effects. It contains omega 2, which has many of the benefits of omega 3, 6, and 9, but it is less well known. Our body actually needs omega 2 but it is seldom talked about.

Squalene can help build new cartilage and helps with cardiovascular and brain health. It can help with the circulation of blood around your body. Since ancient times it has been recognised as a great general health tonic, and can even help with your digestion.

It may also have natural antibiotic properties, and help turn bad cholesterol (LDL) into good (HDL). It may help your body generate oxygen, boost your immune system, and help with energy management.

So if you want to improve your overall health, grab some squalene or propolis today. You won’t regret it.

Super Health Tonics

You might be wondering if there are any health foods you can take that have awesome benefits in a variety of ways – and we can answer that for you – there are! Propolis and Olive leaf extract both have a variety of health benefits that combat major illnesses.

Propolis has many benefits that make it worth taking on a regular basis. It contains a substance known as galangin, which is a flavonol that combats bacteria and viruses. In vitro studies have shown it to fight breast cancer cell development.

Propolis is also packed in antioxidants, which fight free radicals in the body that can lead to cancer. It is also an anti-inflammatory, which means it can reduce inflammation and swelling.

It can also be effective for healing cold sores, herpes, and is a good remedy for colds and flus. It is currently being researched for its effectiveness in helping with diabetes and ulcers.

Olive Leaf Extract

Olive leaf extract has many similar benefits as propolis. For centuries, Olive products have been appreciated for their medicinal properties, and now modern research is looking into the benefits. Olive leaf extract is being researched for its anti-ageing, immune-boosting, antioxidant, antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, blood sugar stabilising, and cardiovascular protecting properties.

In today’s world where many people are finding antibiotics to be ineffective due to superbugs that are becoming resistant, it’s very important that people look into natural substitutes to treat viral and bacterial infections. The more people that take antibiotics, the more viruses become resistant to that treatment.

As already discussed, antioxidants are a powerful weapon against cancer, due to their excellent defence against free radicals.

Olive leaf extract’s blood sugar stabilising properties not only help diabetics stay healthy but also can help prevent one from becoming diabetic. Propolis and Olive leaf extract are fast becoming recognised as great overall health boosters. Check them out today.

Exercise for Cardiovascular Health

In our last blog post we explored some exercises you can do to strengthen your body without gym equipment. In today’s post we are going to look at some exercises you can do to maintain good cardiovascular heath.

Jogging is a tried and true cardio workout that activates all the muscles in your body and maintains a high heart rate throughout. If you’re looking to lose weight, this is a great method, especially if you make your session longer than 45 minutes. Any cardio workout that exceeds 45 minutes puts your body into ketosis, which is where you start burning fat.

Some may suffer from joint pain, and if this is you, apart from taking omega 3s, you may choose to do a form of exercise that is easier on the knees.

Cardio in the Home

If you want to stay at home and still get a good cardio workout, we recommend the following exercises. You should start with a gentle warm up, which should include stretching your entire body.

Place your feet flat on the ground with one in front of the other and gently lean forward to stretch your hamstrings and calf muscles. Extend your arms out to your sides, horizontally, with your hands facing forward, and pull them back slowly. This will stretch your arms and chest.

Then extend your arms vertically, again with your hands facing forwards, and pull them back. Another thing you can do to warm up your upper body is chopping the air in front of you with your hands – swing your hand with your fingers outstretched from the inside to the outside, level with your upper chest, then change sides, then repeat the motion except this time level with your middle to lower chest. This can be done swiftly, and will raise your heart rate.

To achieve a cardio workout of above 45 minutes in the home, you will need to do several different exercises – try crunches, push-ups, squats, leg lifts, back lifts, and be creative and come up with exercises to work areas of your body that don’t normally get attended to.

As with any exercise regime, start slowly and gently, and over time, build up the intensity and repetitions. In a short time, you will have a healthier heart and a toned body. Enjoy!

And don’t forget, propolis can also help keep your heart and circulatory system healthy.

Keys to Better Health

Are you looking for a supplement that will benefit your health in many important ways? Propolis may be one of the keys to your better health. It has a range of benefits.

Propolis is an antimicrobial. This means that it will help protect your body from getting a cold, flu, or throat infection. It can improve your body’s ability to heal wounds and burns, keeping bacteria away. It can also help with pimples and neurodermatitis.

Propolis has strong antioxidant properties, due to the flavonoids it contains like pinocembrin. Antioxidants fight free radicals in your body, which can help prevent a range of illnesses, like cancer and heart disease. Free radicals can cause cell damage (oxidisation), but antioxidants convert free radicals into healthy cells.

Propolis is also an antibacterial agent, known to be effective against gram-positive rods (aerobic and anaerobic), E. faecalis, pathogenic bacteria, viruses, mold, and ordinary cocci. It is also known to be effective against parasites like Cholomonas paramecium. This is just a short list of all the nasties propolis will defend against.

Propolis will help defend your body against fungi like Candida and many more. It also restrains the growth of fungus like C. albicans. This makes it a good option for oral health. It helps protect you from yeast-based fungi, too.

Other Benefits

Propolis is also an immunomodulatory substance. This means that it bolsters your immune system and boosts antibody formation. It is an antiprotozoan, fighting diseases like malaria.

Animal research suggests that propolis has an antitumoural property. It has shown to inhibit DNA replication in tumour cells. It has yet to be tested on human tumours. Its antioxidant properties may enable higher doses of chemotherapy due to its ability to ease stress on the liver and kidneys. The propolis component responsible for this is caffeic acid phenethyl ester.

This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to propolis healing benefits. It has been used throughout history and now there is strong science to back up its abilities. We stock propolis here at Natures Naturals.
